Leeward Island

Leeward_IslandsLeeward Islands is an archipelago in the north Antillen Small. He is called “leeward” (literally meaning ‘wind down’) as in the general area of wind to blow from the south to north. So downwind, Leeward Islands are in the back – or down the wind – Windward Islands, where the trade wind to blow from the south.

Leeward Islands also refer to the colony of the United Kingdom in this area, namely Antigua, Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, Saint Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla and (until 1940) Dominica, from 1671 to 1816 and again from 1833 until 1960. This region is called colony Federal Leeward Islands from 1871 until 1956 and the Territory of the Leeward Islands in 1956 until 1960. (http://id.wikipedia.org)
